Near the city of Torres Vedras, at the Portuguese Atlantic coast, between cliffs, ocean and sand dunes, there are small peatmires. They are among the few remaining fens in these unique, longstanding wetland ecosystems in the Mediterranean Region (a global peatland distribution transitional zone). Local communities are fighting for their protection, among them the ecologists, archaeologists, biogeographers, botanists, memory and cultural workers, artists - most of these integrating the Double-u Replay Association, who hosted the second biennial meeting of The Venice Agreement: In the days leading up to World Peatlands Day on 2 June 2024 peatland custodians from the Global South and Global North were gathering in Torres Vedras and took inspiration from these tiny wetland sites to strengthening their conservation saga worldwide.
