Humans in Aukštumala 11 thousand years ago. Results of archaeological studies
Current Project
Humans and peatlands are bonded in many ways since ancient times. Aukštumala peatbog is no exception, where three human settlements dating back to approximately 12,000–11,500 years ago are discovered and excavated. This period marks the very end of the Lateglacial and the beginning of the Holocene, i.e. the brink of environmental changes and the transformation of the Baltic Sea. In this field lecture, the results of archaeological surveys in Aukštumala are presented, focusing on the reconstruction of the palaeolandscape and how humans cope within it. Archaeological excavations of the three sites are discussed by presenting the types of archaeological finds, which provide insights into prehistoric toolmaking techniques, choices in raw material selection, and subsistence strategies.
